Maya is a film about the complexities of a woman's psyche. It explores the "wild woman" archetype, playing around with ideas such as oppression, the subconscious, and liberation. My inspirations include the books Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Steppenwolf by Hermann Hesse, and Stranger by Albert Camus. Films of Kieslowski are a major source of inspiration, especially The Double Life of Veronique and Three Colours: Red. Possession by Andrzej Zulawski, and Cries and Whispers by Ingmar Bergman are also at the top of the list. I hope this film will provide strength and resilience to women who watch it, and help them find the "wildness" within themselves. I hope they hear the echoes and whispers of the wild woman, and embrace the collective wisdom shared by women with the help of storytelling.
