With the world at war in 1914, two aristocratic brothers, one accomplished and the other autistic, leave their stately home in Ireland for the trenches of France where they must contend with not only the pressures of war and class, but also family and fraternity. Bound by the responsibilities of their class, the aristocratic brothers, Charlie and Teddy, enlist to fight the Germans in what is thought will be a quick flare up between the great powers. Charlie sees it as his duty to serve King and Country whilst Teddy goes to war to please his cold and classist mother - much to the distress of Teddy's bested father who knows that his boy is special. Unsurprisingly, life in the trenches proves impossible for the two brothers as Charlie does his utmost to shield Teddy from attacks by the enemy but also from attacks within. But there is nothing that the elder can do to safeguard the younger from the sheer pandemonium of a war that drags ever on. And as the bonds of brotherhood are tested to the absolute limit, one brother must make a life-changing decision to protect the other. A tragic coming of age tale of Shakespearean proportions, 'Charlie, Safe Home' is a gritty, uncompromising portrayal of life in the trenches that illustrates just how far fraternal love can go.
