The Tom Machine (1980)

Tom lives a hundred or so years in the future. His life seems to be typical of the time; humdrum, edged with violence, and slightly comical. But there are inconsistencies. Something is going on, and Tom is both bored and worried. Fed up with arguing with his bad-tempered household computer, dissatisfied with his trivial friends, and unable even to remember what his job is, he decides to leave. But everyone keeps telling him that is impossible.
