They are a very close knit family and life is good until, on the night of Alfred and Nneamaka's twentieth anniversary, Alfred is shot in a botched robbery attempt. Alfred is rushed into critical care but, due to his own procrastination, the family has no medical insurance and is forced to use their life savings to pay the bills. Everyone's life is thrown into turmoil as the family structure is disintegrated. Nneamaka must look for work and is no longer available to pick the kids up from school. Evelyn, while dealing with the pressure of college applications and interviews, begins an interracial relationship that ignites criticism from her friends and family. As the family's financial problems continue to mount, Charles, tempted by the opportunity for fast money and girls, falls in with a dangerous crowd. Toby has set his heart on his father's full recovery and has begun saving money to buy his father a gift when he is released from the hospital. Nneamaka holds a degree in architecture but is unable to find a job in the field. As bills pile up and the family home is threatened with foreclosure, Nneamaka is forced to take whatever work she can find. Suffering humiliation and indignity at the hands of both customers and her employer, Nneamaka begins to breakdown. As a father fights for his life, his family's future hangs in the balance. Will they be able to stand through the emotional and financial pressures or will they be torn apart?
