Eugene Bullard was the first African-American fighter pilot of World War I. He was an early expatriate to Europe. Arriving in Scotland first, he performed various jobs making his way to France. During WWI, he joined the French military and eventually became a pilot. He became one of the most decorated soldiers of the war. When the Americans joined the war, he planned to join the US Air force, but because of his race, he was denied admission. He also served in World War II as a spy since he spoke French and German. With the Germans invading France, he escapes to the US where he landed a job as an elevator.
