Lance Corporal Stanley Moore as he hangs onto the last ebbs of his life just off the front lines somewhere near Dunkirk. He coughs his last thoughts to his comrade in arms, Frederick Swan - another shell-shocked soldier battling to make sense of the bloody post-battleground they find themselves on. Stanley knows that he's dying and Frederick is on hand to take his last confession. Stanley expresses guilt that he wasn't able to be fully present for his family during their own darkest hour when his youngest son succumbed to the crippling lung disease that runs in his family bloodline. Frederick is left with the choice to atone Stanley for these confessions and help him be at peace when he passes, but he is unsure if Stanley deserves this from the stories Stanley envisions to him of how he treated his wife after their son died.
