In 'The Nannies', filmmaker Signe Barvild Stæhr returns to the loss of her mother when she herself was just five years old, and she reconstructs her childhood in the suburban Copenhagen of the 1980s in a performative documentary. Signe Barvild Stæhr flips through old photos and discusses them with her father, who on top of Signe's mother's death left Signe with different nannies throughout her childhood. The nannies moved in with Signe and her father for shorter periods of time, and their departure meant more pain and less security for Signe. But much is still unclear for both her and her father's memory, and therefore Signe decides to seek out the nannies and hear their stories from her childhood.
