German newspaper reporter Ludwig has written too truthfully for the Nazi regime, and realizes he must keep ready to flee. He takes his son Rolf and his inseparable dog Adi (alas named after Adolf Hitler), who didn't understand why he wasn't allowed to join the 'cool' Hitlerjugend like his mates, along to head for America, by France and Spain. It's a perilous, exhausting journey, forcing them to rely on an anti-Franco resistance network. Ordered to leave his dog along, Rolf rather hides the canine in his bag. Despite junior guide Nuria bribing a police patrol, the barking mutt draws German attention, so Ludwig hands the essential to his boy before saving the kids by getting caught alone. Rolf teaches Nuria the power of fiction and helps her liberate her parents, ultimately reaching the Liberty station alone.
