During the earlier stages of COVID-19 and its rapid global progression, quarantine orders and social distancing measures have forced populations to stay home for their safety, causing an array of problems for many families who find themselves forced into close, constant contact. For the Escalona family, however, the newfound opportunity to grow closer and develop stronger familial bonds has become their last line of defense in such difficult times. Living in a suburban neighborhood in Miami, Florida, one of the biggest pandemic hotspots in the United States, college student Isabella Escalona turns the camera on her parents, Ronald and Barbara Escalona, and two siblings, Krystal and Michael, as they adjust to life in lock-down. While they face an array of difficulties, including having to continue managing their small, independent businesses from home and the sudden transition from in-person to online learning, WHAT THE #$%@ IS HAPPENING? focuses on the family's efforts to make the best of a bad situation. Amid the confusion and fear of COVID-19, Barbara attempts to keep her sanity by taking "spring cleaning" and home organization to a whole new level, while Ronald practices constant and thorough disinfection of the entire house. Oldest daughter Krystal battles a loud and pestering duck living outside her bedroom window, youngest son Michael resorts to the joys of video games, and middle child Isabella has a riot capturing these hilarious family experiences on camera. WHAT THE #$%@ IS HAPPENING? captures a collection of arguments over chores, sarcasm during car rides, impromptu dance parties, playing dress-up, singing, card games, and late-night family dinners.
