On a long-distance bus on the way to Vienna, a poet (early 50s) talks to a puppeteer. Inspired by this conversation she decides to spend a day in her old hometown Vienna. In a café, she meets a young kindergarten teacher who is waiting tables. She very attracted to him and they have sex. The puppeteer finally wants to give up his touring life and live with his girlfriend and their daughter. While his unsuspecting girlfriend, a make-up artist, waits for him, he first seeks out the lesbian theater director whose son he fathered, which no one knows. This was part of an agreement, in return for arranging engagements for him. Once again, he hopes for a lucrative business relationship. Meanwhile, the artistic director is having an affair with the theater's pretty cleaning lady; although she suspects that the cleaning woman expects economic benefits above all else. The circles of lies, deceit and false expectations continue to expand. Eventually, truths come to light for everybody, which have consequences for the rest of their lives. This also applies to the poet who visits her ex-husband, who still has feelings for her, despite having a new wife, although she had left him and their son - the son who is now a young kindergarten teacher.
