Julian Broughton brings us his new compositions, Sonata for Violin and Piano. Allegro Molto. Written in 2014 for Ellie Blackshaw and Rachel Fryer, the work is in three movements. Presto (1st movement) a kind of scherzo, begins with playful dialogue which is contrasted with passages of sustained melody. Lento (2nd movement). In complete contrast to the first movement this is a fugue which breaks out of itself into an expressive and richly harmonised middle section before returning to the rather austere mood of the opening. Molto (3rd movement). Lively and fast, this returns to the mood of the opening movement. It briefly recalls the melancholy of the middle movement before ending with virtuoso energy. Finishing the live concert is the delightful rendition of Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending which completes this wonderful enchanting experience.
