Jaapi (2019)

This documentary portrays the history and usage of the Jaapi, a hat made from the Livistona jenkinsiana palm leaf to protect one from the sun and rain. In earlier times, it was an indispensable accessory of the Assamese people, in particular, famers. An iconic symbol of Assamese culture today, it is often coated with wool, velvet cloth spangles, and mica, and used both as a piece of home décor and to felicitate distinguished guests.
