Before We're Gone (2022)

Confronted by the climate crisis, Nessa (11) preoccupies herself with saving the world through campaigns in her local suburb instead of facing her fractured home life. While picking up rubbish at the Wallum Heathland, Nessa accidentally interrupts Sofia (75) scattering the ashes of her child and the two quickly bond. Nessa can't escape her family's worsening circumstances forever though as her brother Liam (17) hides an overdue electricity bill, their power gets cut off and their unwell Mum has a fall in the dark. It's a lot for an eleven year old to face, but Nessa's friendship with Sofia teaches her how the Wallum Heathland is a resilient -yet vulnerable- ecosystem where the lifeforms must work together to survive. Now Nessa must bring her environmentalism home to Liam and Mum, and work out how they can sustainably survive in their own world, together.
