A young girl, Nina, works in the dining room of a resort on the Crimean coast. A former front-line soldier, Colonel Grigory Afanasyevich, an now a lonely pensioner, arrives and meets Nina, whom he saved as a child during the war. The lonely old man takes care of the girl like his own daughter, he wants her to enter a technical school. He volunteers to help Nadezhda Borisovna, who works in one of the Kharkiv technical schools. But the frivolous girl begins an affair with the young astrophysicist Pavel Evgenievich, a collector of colorful pebbles. The old colonel at first finds the romance charming, but soon realizes that for the young man Nina is just another hobby. He tries his best to reason with Nina, but to no avail. Then, the old man decides to have a serious conversation with the collector of colorful pebbles. He talks about how he fought, how he saved Nina, how he was wounded, how he searched for her after the war. And now some cheap "Cassanova" comes around and wants to take advantage of the girl. And Paul understood as the season ends and the vacationers go home.
