"The Gypsy Baron" pictures the life of settled Roma in Soroca, a town in the Republic of Moldova right at the Ukrainian border. The for Roma untypical sedentariness and the unimaginable wealth they reached as a result, reveal astonishing things, incidents and encounters. The whole settlement equals a gigantomaniac, surreal and colorful Potemkin village. The film accompanies Artur Cherrari, the real democratically elected Baron of all Roma in Moldova and thus the head of the Roma in Soroca, and young Vale who might become Baron in future, through the world of the Roma, illustrating their traditions, customs and everyday life. This involves issues such as the position of the Roma in Europe, their Soviet past, their social structure, their history and, their future.
