The tragic but heartwarming drama plays out as narrated by the wise voice of a mature Luna, Mossie's younger sister. Luna first takes us to the inseparable pair: Mossie and Adriaan, her best friend and fellow adventurer. Through the sisters' mother's illness and death in their early childhood, Mossie and Adiaan remain safe in the wonderful world they occupy together. Luna then takes us forward in time. In their final year of high school, Mossie, in true teenage fashion, falls in love with Leon, a smooth-talking rugby player from university. She enters a dysfunctional relationship, putting strain on her life-long friendship with Adriaan, who remains patient with Mossie despite her starry-eyed blindness. He tries to focus instead on breaking his track record on the athletics field; when Adriaan runs, he flies. Luna remains ever-observant as she watches life unfold around the pair. The sisters' father struggles to deal with Mossie's obviously dangerous path, but also learns to fall in love again. And Adriaan's free-spirited aunt returns from her travels to seek refuge with the family, not knowing they need her just as much. Mossie finally realizes that her relationship with Leon is poisonous, which plunges her into a deep depression; only Adriaan can pull her out so she might learn to fly too.
