Based on actual events. In 1921, Father James Coyle was gunned down on his rectory porch at St. Paul's Cathedral in Birmingham Alabama by Methodist Minister Edwin Stephenson. Father Coyle had just performed the wedding ceremony of the Minister's daughter to a Catholic Puerto Rican. Edwin Stephenson shot him three times and was subsequently arrested for the murder. Based on the only set of court transcripts that the KKK didn't destroy, the judiciary system was corrupt and run by the Klan, including the Klan replacing the Judge over the case with a Klan Judge. Stephenson admitted to the jury that he indeed shot Father Coyle three times and didn't know which bullet killed him. There are 9 pages in the court transcripts that show the Judge informing the jury how they can find Stephenson not guilty by reasons of insanity. The Jury found him not guilty. "Saint James" tells the story behind the scenes and how the opposing attorneys planned their strategies, as well as their reactions to the threats by the Klan to try to dismiss this incident and case.
