One night in September, the young officer candidate Lilly goes overboard on a sail training ship of the German navy and dies. Initial rescue efforts are unsuccessful and the search remains fruitless. Questions arise: How could Lilly have died? The journalist Hartmut Kerber, who is present on the ship, begins to investigate.
