The protagonist, Claudia, is frantic to find job and desperate to avoid foreclosure. After many unsuccessful auditions, she worries how she will make ends meet and provide for her young daughter, Lena. But after a casting director makes inappropriate sexual advances toward her, Claudia, declines, and as a result, she loses her last opportunity. Because Claudia's name is associated with a sexual scandal, potential employers refuse to hire her. Eventually, she and her daughter are homeless and are living out of their car. Both mother and daughter must fight to protect each other and balance ethics with survival. In a moment of utter desperation, Claudia returns to the office to beg the director for work, knowing that he will only want sex in return. Sensing something is amiss Lena bursts into the room. The casting director, both confused by Lena's presence and uncomfortable with the realization that Claudia has a daughter, hesitates. He feels some sense of remorse and pity for the two. He reaches into his pocket and extends to them a business card to contact another director regarding a children's soup commercial for Lena. It is a guaranteed job, and it pays just enough to make it through the month. Lena, like her mother, is thereby swept into another generation of performers. No doubt, she will be exposed to the very same dangers, exasperations, and fears that her mother experienced as an actress.
