Cursed by the powerful Goddess Kali to a life of endless wandering in the woods for killing a female buffalo, the Vaghri, descendants of hunters, must offer the deity a blood sacrifice once a year to appease her wrath. As the original offspring of the ancient nomadic tribes and inhabitants of the South, the Vaghri are called in English Gypsies, and in Tamil Fox-hunters; however, in contrast to the rest of the population, they grow beards and have long hair to honour their Mother Goddess. At the tourist haven of Mamallapuram, the Vaghri women sell their necklaces, while two boys and childhood friends, Karthik and Ravi, are dreaming of a better life as respected members of society. Now, almost adults--with big dreams and great anticipation for their first sacrifice--the two friends, eventually, will part ways. Karthik knows that only a proper education can take the Vaghri kids off the streets, while Ravi thinks otherwise. But, is there a future for them?
