Began in the 1970s as an experimental city and urban laboratory, Arcosanti continues to be an alternative to urban sprawl. Arcosanti seeks to offer the urban system a boundary, keeping the natural countryside in close proximity to its urban dwellers. Located in the high desert of Arizona, just 70 miles north of Phoenix, Arcosanti will house 5,000 residents and will settle only 25 acres of a 4060-acre land preserve when complete.
