Having stayed at home to tend the family farm while his friends emigrated to foreign cities, young Farmer Cunningham finds himself isolated and alone when his father dies suddenly. He has no one to share his feelings of loss with, and so is pleasantly surprised to find a balloon with a smiley face has floated onto his land and become caught in the bushes. He frees the balloon, and begins talking to it, sharing his thoughts with it as though it were a friend of companion. Thinking of the balloon as a friend, companion, or even as if it were his own father, he is able to come to terms with his sudden grief. After coming to terms with his father's death, he realizes that holding onto the balloon any longer would be selfish, and could lead to madness, so he sets the balloon off again, to fly into the wind, and perhaps help console some other lonely soul.
