Roberto Bussenghi is a cross-border commuter like any other: every day he goes through customs to work in Italian Switzerland. Unfortunately, the same Border Guard is waiting for him every day: Loris J. Bernasconi. His over-zealous attitude - and the motto that he repeats as a mantra (Rules are rules!) - makes life impossible for the cross-border commuter who is regularly late to work. Precisely because of this 'no exceptions' outlook, the border guard is relieved of his role, while the cross-border commuter, convinced he is going to be fired for being late all the time, is promoted to project manager to oversee the development of his revolutionary invention. Bernasconi is enrolled in a career retraining programme, but proves to be a disaster on every front. Until, that is, the perfect position comes up: a company threatened by industrial espionage seeking a bodyguard for its project manager. The two will have to coexist 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Condemned to a life together, aside from teasing each other about the differences between Italy and Switzerland, they begin to understand and help each other, gradually realising that they need each other to resolve their own problems. Just as it seems they might actually become friends, they are kidnapped by a pair of 'baddies': the Maidù brothers, competitors who want to get their hands on Bussenghi's project at all costs. Thanks to the skills of the border guard, they manage to escape and the getaway gives Bernasconi a chance to understand that while it's right to follow the rules, there will always be exceptions in life.
