Set in a dystopian society where books are banned; THE LAST PROTESTER explores how a father must come to terms with the oppressive government he works for upon finding out that his daughter is rebelling against it. Directed & co-written by Emmy award winner, Nicole Castillo, and Sundance narrative semi-finalist, Mike Sitnikov, the inspiration for this science-fiction, political thriller originated in Nicole's passion in examining her Cuban heritage & history. Inspired by her uncle's story of remorse fighting as a soldier for the dictator Fidel Castro during his rise to power in the1960s, Nicole begin to ponder the role of moral responsibility versus survival within the polarizing political climate in which Castro created. After numerous hours interviewing her guilt-ridden uncle about his active participation in the mass killings of non-Castro supporters, Nicole's initial approach pivots to focus on a character in the midst of the discomfort that comes in facing choices which are ethically questionable at the price of one's safety. Nicole had found a story not in trying to understand the right or wrong choice of a citizen, rather in trying to understand how choices are never black & white and seldom have binary solutions.
