Ethan Colwell is living through the same trials as almost every American high school student: rejection, jealousy, and bullying. He sees this as a unique situation and a demonstration of his loss of control over his world. As a result, he is driven to take these benign life experiences far more seriously than they are. He develops a fondness for weapons as comfort objects and brings them to school to give himself a sense of stability in his world. He neglects to include in his life those who try to help him, and in doing this he allows his anger to reach the breaking point, focusing the eruption on those he deems to be unfair to him.
