A famous Tibetan saying goes: "Walking around a mountain in the Year of the Horse and walking around a lake in the Year of the Goat." And 2003 is the Year of Goat on the Tibetan Calendar. It is said, "walking around the lake once during the Year of the Goat produces spiritual benefits equal to those attained by walking around the lake 12 times in any other year." Therefore, Namtso Lake has become the most popular holy site for pilgrim worship. There are two special groups of pilgrims who come to the lake to worship. One of them is constituted by lamas and nuns led by two living Buddhas. The other one includes three people: Yangpei, Geming and Dunzhu. They use handmade yak-leather rafts to circle the lake. The whole process is so dangerous that it's considered brushing shoulders with death.
