During World War II, an Army colonel arrives at the home of Mrs. Ryan to deliver the wonderful news that only three of her sons are dead. The Army managed to save her fourth son, and the colonel wants a pat on the back for it. When Mrs. Ryan seems less than appreciative, he points out that she's seeing the glass half empty.
