Zoe Dunning joined the Navy in 1985 before "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" became military policy, and being gay was strictly "forbidden". As a Naval Officer tired of hiding her sexuality, Zoe came out in 1993. While negative media attention, and some new legal wording kept the military from dishonorably discharging her, Zoe was still forced to keep any same-sex relationships behind closed doors. When Zoe finds acceptance and celebration in San Francisco's gay community, it encourages her to take her fight a step further. Believing the military grows stronger by accepting diversity in its service members, Zoe speaks out to Capitol Hill, and they start listening.
