With their married life not unfolding the way either of them had hoped, William and Virginia Heath are at odds once again about having a child. Virginia strongly values her independence, but her husband idealizes the "white picket fence" dream. When Virginia finally agrees to the compromise of adoption, William is on cloud nine. Virginia tries her best to connect with her new son, but is unable to forge the type of bond that his father has with him. When their child is stolen away from them in a freak accident, the only thing that can bring Virginia back to a life worth living is that which was lost.
