During World War II, a scientist working on the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, New Mexico cracks under the psychological strain of creating the world's most formidable weapon. Hours before the new bomb is to be tested, he discovers a family living on the test site. But are they real, or is he imagining them?
