Storyline: Martha (Margit Carstensen), a single woman in her early thirties, is on vacation in Rome with her father when he suddenly dies of a heart attack. She reacts with detachment and returns to Germany to live with her highly-strung and verbally abusive mother. After rejecting a marriage proposal from her boss, she accepts one from Helmuth, a domineering and contemptuous man. On their honeymoon in Italy, Helmuth begins to control every aspect of her existence: he removes her from her beloved job, isolates her from her mother, and turns the marriage into one of oppression and abuse. Naive and submissive, Martha initially believes his violence, jealousy, and possessiveness are simply part of married life, until reconnecting with an old colleague reveals Helmuth’s sadistic nature. Trapped between dependence and fear, she becomes convinced that her husband is following her and may try to kill her.
