Wong Fei-hung, also known as "Freddie Wong," is a young troublemaker who finds himself in a series of predicaments. First, he humiliates a cocky assistant martial arts instructor and later tries to impress his friends by flirting with a woman, only to be beaten by her older female guardian. His embarrassment deepens when he learns that the woman and her guardian are actually his visiting aunt and cousin, whom he had not previously met. Finally, he beats up a thug, who turns out to be the son of a powerful local man. In response, his father decides to discipline him by intensifying his martial arts training. He arranges for Beggar So, a notorious martial arts master, to train his son. Known for his harsh training methods, Beggar So has a reputation for injuring his students. To avoid this, Wong runs away from home. Desperate and out of money, Wong tries to con a fellow diner into paying for his meal at a restaurant. However, the man turns out to be the restaurant owner. A fight breaks out between Wong and the owner's men, and an old drunkard steps in to help Wong escape. This drunkard is revealed to be Beggar So, also known as the Drunken Master. Beggar So forces Wong into his grueling training regimen, but Wong flees again, only to encounter the notorious killer Yim Tit-sam, also known as Thunderfoot or Thunderleg. Yim, famed for his lethal "Devil's Kick" technique, easily defeats and humiliates Wong. Defeated, Wong returns to Beggar So and commits fully to the Drunken Master's training program. Wong eventually learns Beggar So's secret style, "The Eight Drunken Immortals," a form of Drunken Boxing. He masters seven of the eight styles but struggles with Drunken Miss Ho's style, finding it too feminine. Meanwhile, Yim is hired by a business rival to kill Wong's father. Wong's father fights Yim but is defeated and injured. Wong and Beggar So arrive just in time, and Wong takes over the fight. Beggar So vows not to interfere. Using his newly acquired skills, Wong outmatches Yim's kicking style. Yim then uses his secret move, the Devil's Shadowless Hand, which is too fast for Wong. Wong admits he hasn't mastered the final style, so Beggar So advises him to blend the seven styles to create his own version of the eighth. Wong does so, developing his unique style of Drunken Miss Ho, which he uses to defeat Yim's Shadowless Hand and ultimately triumphs over him.
