Storyline:  In 1927 Paris, Marya Zelli from the West Indies faces destitution following her art-dealer husband Stephan's imprisonment for theft. She accepts lodging with British expatriates H.J. and Lois Heidler, despite recognizing H.J.'s ulterior motives. As a foreigner unable to secure employment, Marya becomes financially dependent on the couple, discovering their marriage conceals complexities and that she joins a succession of previous lodgers. The Heidlers manipulate her perception of Stephan's prospects. Upon his release, Stephan's reintegration efforts complicate the entangled relationships.
