Storyline:  In London’s East End during Thatcher’s recession, Mavis works while her husband Frank and sons Colin and Mark rely on unemployment benefits. Colin is shy and timid, Mark outspoken and headstrong. Their struggles contrast with Mavis’s sister Barbara and her husband John, whose outwardly comfortable life masks the quiet tension of an unfulfilling marriage.
