Storyline:  During the Spanish Civil War, Paulino, Carmela, and their mute assistant Gustavete earn a living as traveling performers. By mistake, they cross into rebel territory and are arrested. Facing execution, they are spared when an Italian commander demands a performance for his troops, forcing them to choose between survival and betraying their ideals.
