Maria, an Iranian teenager evacuated with her mother to Hungary at the start if the Iran-Iraq War, had assumed that her father was dead back in Iran until she discovers some letters that may prove her father is still alive in Tehran. She returns to Iran, adopts Muslim dress, and fantasizes about her father and Iran, finding it " an idealized place of the imagination."
