Storyline:  Franta Louka, a cellist in Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, loses his orchestra position and survives through funeral performances. Facing financial difficulties, he agrees to a marriage arrangement with a Russian woman seeking Czech citizenship. She departs for West Germany, leaving her young son Kolya with his grandmother. When the grandmother dies, Louka becomes responsible for the child.
