In 1962, Calvin, a capable but paranoid scientist, lives with his wife Helen in Los Angeles when, in the midst of the Cuban Missile Crisis, they believe a nuclear war has begun. After 35 years of confinement in a subway shelter, their captive-born son Adam goes out into the outside world to get supplies.
