Ishmael Worth discovers that his father's first wife, long thought dead, is actually alive, making his father's marriage to his mother invalid, which makes him "illegitimate." He breaks off his engagement to his fiancée Beatrice, not wanting to bring shame and scandal to her. However. he soon comes across additional information that could change matters yet again.
