Terry Dunnivan, a retired sea captain Massachusetts, adopts two children, Chrystal and Ned. As Chrystal matures, Terry realizes his love for her has deepened into something more, and he proposes marriage. Chrystal, secretly in love with Ned, agrees to spare Terry's feelings.
