Prince Kinsillo of Italy wishes to repair his dwindling fortunes by marrying Genevieve Granger-Simpson, a wealthy American girl, whose guardian, Daniel Forbes Pike of Kokomo, Indiana, comes to Italy to interview the prospective husband. En route through Italy, Pike meets the king traveling incognito and is unaware of his identity. Later, the king's mistress, Faustina, wife of Ribière, is murdered by the prince, and in making his escape he leaves a blood-stained handkerchief in the king's possession. Ribière, accused of murdering his wife, is sheltered by Pike, whom Kinsillo's father tries to blackmail for protecting a criminal. Pike ultimately denounces the blackmailer and exposes the prince as the assassin. Genevieve, who has been impressed by the passionate advances of the prince, eagerly accepts the attentions of her worthy guardian, and together they return to Kokomo.
