In Bavaria, widow Mother Bernle has four sons: Franz, Johann, Andreas, and Joseph. As World War I looms, Joseph receives a job offer in America and, with money gifted by his mother, leaves for the United States. While Franz serves in the German army, Johann and Andreas are also drafted. In New York, Joseph marries, runs a delicatessen, and later enlists when America enters the war, fighting against his brothers' side.
