The Chess Player (1927)

In 1776, a wounded Polish patriot evades capture by hiding within an ingenious chess-playing automaton, a creation of the enigmatic Baron von Kempelen. As the machine gains fame, it attracts the attention of the Russian Empress and her cunning officer, who begins to suspect the secret within. With tensions rising and the stakes higher than ever, the automaton's true nature could lead to either a brilliant escape or a deadly downfall.
