Storyline:  In 1923, the rural town of Shinshū, a widow named Tsune Nonomiya works tirelessly at a silk factory to provide for her only son, Ryōsuke. Persuaded by his teacher, she sacrifices her meager earnings to send him to Tokyo for higher education. Thirteen years later, Tsune visits Ryōsuke, now a night school teacher, struggling to make ends meet with his wife and child.
