Richard Girard, part of a New Orleans family of cotton merchants, becomes entwined with the English Warburtons, who share business ties extending to France and Prussia. United by a pact formed in 1825, the families believed their multinational enterprise could endure even the aftermath of the Napoleonic Wars.
