In 15th-century Paris, Chief Justice Frollo becomes infatuated with Esmeralda, a beautiful Romani girl. During the Feast of Fools, Frollo orders his adopted son, Quasimodo, the deformed bellringer of Notre Dame Cathedral, to kidnap her. Quasimodo's attempt fails, leading to his public humiliation, where only Esmeralda shows him kindness. Frollo's obsession drives him to frame Esmeralda for murder. Quasimodo intervenes, taking her to the cathedral to invoke sanctuary rights.
