Ulla scolds her manager in the gramophone shop for dismissing the eldest clerk and proposes that she should resign instead of the man, which the manager accepts. She takes the train to Stockholm, loses her purse at the station, wins two bets, one with a hot-dog-man and one with a literary critic, gets a job in a gramophone section at a department store, flirts with a writer, who works as a bookstore assistant on the same floor. Both are dismissed and Ulla follows the young man, the author Gösta Brehmer, to his bachelor's home where she meets the painter Pålle Wiman. The next day she gets a job as a corrector at a newspaper and is dismissed when she changed an bad review of Gösta Brehmer's new novel to idle praise. The author of the review is Ivar Mothén, whom she previously met and with whom she won the bet.
