A Polynesian sailor, Terangi, finds his life upended when he is unjustly jailed after striking a racist planter with political connections during a stop in Tahiti. Despite pleas from his ship’s captain and others, the strict French governor, Eugene DeLaage, refuses clemency. Terangi’s attempts to escape, and as DeLaage leads a manhunt, a catastrophic hurricane strikes, forcing the islanders to confront both human and natural justice.
