After playing the field, Navy sailor Sonny Phyffe is settling down, marrying wealthy Janie Prescott. Their short two-day honeymoon, the length of his leave, is shortened even more when he is late to the wedding due to his ship docking later than expected. They heading off on said honeymoon is delayed time and time again with one issue or misunderstanding after another involving them and the cast of characters surrounding them: Janie's naive and scatterbrained mother Liza Prescott; Liza's scheming business manager Peter Warrington III; Sonny's father Colonel Hector Phyffe, also a ladies man like Sonny and a natural shyster; Hector's new wife, opera diva Genya Smetana who he has not told about having a twenty-nine year old son in wanting to appear younger to her than he really is; and nightclub singer Leslie Quayle, Hector's former paramour and still willing partner in his schemes, especially if there is some benefit to her.
