Jesusita en Chihuahua (1942)

This Musical-Comedy is directed by one of its principal stars, namely, Rene Cardona. It also shares its title with a popular Mexican polka that Pancho Villa adopted as his battle anthem during the Mexican Revolution and was actually composed by one of his fellow combatants. However, this film has nothing to do with Villa or that war. Instead, it chronicles the trials and tribulations of a newly-elected small-town Mayor named Valentin, (played by Pedro Infante). After a heated campaign, the Mayor is shot and injured, presumably by one of many enemies who opposed him. He is taken in and cared for by Jesusita, (Susana Guizar), a tom-boy rancher who has a low opinion of her patient and doesn't seem to like him at all, During his recovery in Jesusita's home, Valentin learns that a man and woman, each from the town's two rival and most prominent families are secretly in love. It becomes clear that disclosing their forbidden relationship will affect the whole town for years to come. Valentin also sees his opportunity to get revenge, since he is confident at least one of the influential families is behind his attempted assassination. Although the plot seems a bit unusual for its genre, it obviously works in this instance, as the film remains among one of Infante's most popular works.
